Comics in South Africa is a very diverse field. There is no established 'industry', eg. in the US, France and Japan. With a minute exception, most printed comics you'd find in South Africa would be self-published, underground stuff - showcasing wildly different stories and art styles, depending on the tastes and interests of the creators.
Since 2000 I have been part of these underground comic creator groups and over the years I've collaborated with a number of writer friends to work on original stories. The aim has been to create something in genre (scifi, horror, etc.) that still would feel distinctly South African.
These eventually found their way into a few local anthologies and even Heavy Metal.
In recent years I've focused on silent, visual narratives with a surreal quality, yet grounded in an African experience.
