LAPA publishers (an affiliate of Penguin Random House) commissioned me to illustrate a graphic novel adaptation of prolific South African writer Fanie Viljoen's 2016 novel, 'The last Time I Died'. The graphic novel would initially be released in Afrikaans as 'Laaste Lewe' and a little later under the original English title.
Fanie did the adaptation himself and had a good sense of how to script a comic, which made it a very smooth process. I had a lot of freedom with the creation of the characters, environments, etc. which I really enjoyed. Part of the brief was to give it a dark atmosphere and I was exited to work in a more ink-heavy style with lots of black, taking inspiration from the illustrations of Mike Mignola.
